The stars have aligned and the sunken city is rising. The Green Lama returns in this fully authorized novel by Adam Lance Garcia. Racing across the world to rescue his beloved Jean Farrell, the Green Lama faces off against Nazis and demons from the deep, only to discover the terrifying truth behind his powers and his connection to the ancient evil known as Cthulhu. A unique blend of horror and adventure, the GREEN LAMA UNBOUND is a tour-de-force that redefines the classic hero and sets the stage for an astonishing new chapter in the Green Lama Legacy.

With many Superheroes on the big screen and different ones coming out nearly every month, one might think that there would be a lot of great superhero novels out there. For the most part, they do not exist; “Unbound,” though, could certainly be nominated as such a story. “Unbound” tells the continuing story of the Green Lama, a true Buddhist Lama, who uses his mystical talents for the good of humanity.

Its background, history, and perspective is entirely consistent with the original 14 stories published from April 1940 to March 1943. It is an authorized continuation of the Green Lama pulps keeping the characters the same as the ones originally the original 14 novels written by Kendell Foster Crossen. It builds wonderfully on the old and projects the hero in new and creative situations. In all ways, “Unbound” can be considered canonical.

The stories open with a small vignette where Jethro Dumont, the Green Lama, first encounters his Tibetan teacher, Geshe Tsaroung. He asks for training, not for money, wealth, fame, or excess, but for purpose. Tsaroung seems reluctant, but his ring indicates differently, and so Dumont finds his destiny. As the novel progresses, nearly each chapter gives us another glimpse into his training and how he gains the capability to be the Green Lama, beginning in 1923.

After the flashback at the beginning of the first chapter, the story jumps to 1939, a few months after the original novels happened. The Green Lama starts a new adventure, one that will literally save the world.

With the backdrop of Chapter 1, Garcia has established a strong hook for the rest of the story. In Greece, we the Green Lama and two buddies at the heart of a mystery that they do not understand based on a nightmare from Tsarong. The reader has the advantage of having other characters bring more understanding to the tremendous task before the Lama. Most useful are the Nazis dispatched by Hitler much like in “Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark” who are after a Jade book that is apparently located in the Greek city that Dumont has entered looking for Jean; eventually it leads to the South Pacific. The mystery harkens back to Lovecraft’s 1928 “The Call of Cthulhu,” and the rising city in Tsarong’s vision/nightmare is R’lyeh where the dead Cthulhu is dreaming…somewhere in the South Pacific.

A superbly creative novel with something new on every page, loaded with fun situations and desperate measures! The reader will love it. Garcia’s flowing narrative is a joy to read, different from the pulpish, newspaper-like original Crossen stories. When done, the reader will want more, but will also be tired from the explosive ride of the novel. He will also want to go back and read those earlier stories filtered now with the enhanced understanding provided by Garcia, such as how the Green Lama uses radioactive salts work without Dumont sprouting tumors growing in every direction. Great tale!

The Green Lama Unbound by Adam Lance Garcia

NOTICE

Any spoilers are totally unintended. This is just to tease the reader into wanting to read this for him or her self!

END NOTICE.

1928 Following the deaths of his parents in an auto accident, millionaire Jethro Dumont wanders the world seeking purpose. He arrives in Tibet at the Temple of the Clouds, to be greeted by the current Tulku, Geshe Tsarong, Khenpo of the temple. At this time, Geshe Tsarong is the wielder of the “Jade Tablet, a ring of rainbow hair that is actually sewn through this middle finger of the right hand.

Dumont begs for sanctuary, but Tsarong is hesitant. Then the Tulka collapses in pain as the ring detaches itself from his finder. Then it is Jethro’s turn to cry out as the ring weaves itself onto his right hand middle finger. Now Tsarong knows that Jethro is destined to become the Green Lama. And the Green Lama has a tremendous battle to fight in his future. For now, he must be trained.

1939 Jethro has come into the possession of a second jade tablet. (See The Green Lama Horror in Clay.) As he strives to unlock its secrets, Tsarong arrives with bad news. The Lama’s destiny has begun to catch up with him. Still, Tsarong cannot just tell the Green Lama what that destiny is. The Buddhists have a saying To know one’s destiny is to void it. The Green Lama must face his destiny without prior knowledge. And now, the events are beginning.

A sudden vision of Jethro’s love, Jean Farrell in danger sends the Green Lama into a pain-filled trance. He sees and hears things beyond his comprehension. The one thing he does understand is that Jean is in danger.

Jean is in Greece, and is certainly in danger. She has been accused of the murder of the Mayor of Kamariotissa on the island of Samothrace. She has been “rescued” by a man named Aïas Prometeo, who, as it will soon be revealed, is nothing that he seems. There are hints that Jean has a destiny of her own to fulfill, and telling her what to do is not an option.

The Green Lama gathers “Lieutenant John Caraway and Ken Clayton, and as Jethro Dumont, is rushing to Greece aboard an airship piloted by Rick Masters, an expert pilot used by Dumont occasionally. None of them know that Jethro is the Green Lama. He now shares something terrifying with his comrades. The Green Lama has discovered that both of The Jade Tablets he now possesses is somehow involved with the Cult of Cthulhu. He doesn’t know as of yet that there is a third Jade Tablet…

The story takes us from the skyscrapers of New York to the newly raised sunken city of R’yleth; in the air and under the ocean in a submarine; and battles with Nazis, Undead former foes, the Deep Ones, Nyarlathotep, and finally Cthulhu himself. Gathered are The Jade Tablets, the Scions that must wield them, sacrifices to be made, and the city has risen for the ceremony to begin. The Elder God is set to return, and The Green Lama, Jean Farrell, and newly met Scion Vasili are there to stop the rise of Cthulhu. But the deck is stacked in the favor of Cthulhu. Only one Jade Tablet, Jethro’s, is needed to allow the Elder God to rise; but three are needed to keep him to keep him down. And Nyarlathotep has control of the third tablet, possesses the third Scion, and has the dreaded Necronomicon, in a Latin translation.

Unknown to them all, Tsarong has done a little stacking of the deck himself!

The book has one surprise following another so fast that you must be careful to keep up. Every thread of this epic adventure is a necessary piece of the final tapestry, and like a fine tapestry each thread must be carefully placed and sequenced. In the end when the last knot is tied in the threads, they come together and their beauty is breathtaking! In this book Adam Garcia has written what can only be described as a pulp masterpiece! Filled with thrills, spills, and chills; the world of the hero pulp and the world of the Lovecraft Mythos horror pulp are seamless welded together by a master of the craft! This is one you don’t want to miss!

I am granting five out of five stars to Adam Garcia, plus. This is possibly the best pulp novel, and certainly the best Green Lama adventure, that I have ever read, bar none. Keep them coming, Mr. Garcia! Encore!
